I did this PGCert as I lacked formal training in medical education. Prior to this course, I had engaged in informal departmental teaching but did not know much about the nuts and bolts of education. During this course, I learnt the theory behind teaching and learning. I also gained exposure to assessment planning and evaluation, areas I know little about before this course. I feel that these parts of the course have given me a solid foundation for a potential future career in education, either in the postgraduate or undergraduate setting.
I used the planning guide from the PGCert to develop a teaching session on obstetric anaesthesia for some junior trainees. This course has also made me reflect on my practice as a clinical teacher and I aim to provide better quality feedback to junior trainees.
Overall, I am thankful to NAPGET for sponsoring this course as it has allowed me to explore my interest in medical education without the extra cost.
